Genre Study

Introduction
In this blog post i am going to attempt to learn more about my chosen genre of comedy. I am researching this using "comedy films a teachers guide" by Brian Dunbar.

Slapstick
Slapstick comedy is the earliest and most popular form of comedy in the silent era; it evolved a lot of movement and a form of "Obligatory chase".

France dominated comedy before 1914, where the company 'Pathe' started producing films on a production line basis; they then later signed Andre Deed . Andre Reed was well known for his music hall and acrobatic background in which he was very successful.

At this time in the history of comedy the type of costume indicated the type of comedy instead of the personality of the comedian. So if they were dressed as a clown it would set the "type" of comedy.

Inspiration-The Inbetweeners

This is the opening sequence for the inbetweeners, I like this opening sequence because it shows what the show is about- it is simple but effective.

Although it is computer animated opening sequence it still has the actors included. I like the idea of some of my opening sequence to be like this and by having the mixture of both i feel it could be effective.

The music is upbeat and the bright colour gives you an insight into what the rest of the program is going to be like- this is completely different to Hot Fuzz as there approach is to not show you what the film is like in the opening sequence.

I have taken some of my ideas from this title sequence like the bright colours that represent the rest of the film and the computered titles and credits.

Inspiration-Hot Fuzz

This is the opening of Hot Fuzz-The reason why i like this opening is because it is simple but effective. I am planning to use some of the ideas given and expand on them-like when he is walking though the building bu adding some credits.

You wouldn't know that Hot Fuzz is a comedy for the first few seconds-although this is a good idea i am planning to make it more known that my opening sequence is a comedy.

I like the long plan shot as he has to walk to the camera, also having the only sound being the foot steps of him walking adds tension.

My Title Sequence

The genre that I have chosen for my practical production is comedy- I have picked this genre because it is the genre I feel that I can est relate to, and I feel this is how I will be most successful. My inspiration for my title sequence is from a mixture of well known comedy's such as The Inbetweeners and Hot Fuzz. I think that these both have different aspects that give them an edge on other comedies.

I am setting the story to be two teenage boys which are best friends, they are socially awkward- which makes school an interesting and funny experience, and everything bad happens to them! I am setting the title sequence on their journey together to school and it will end when they get to there class room, this will share the journey that the two boys go through with the audience.

The sequence will be set in the morning in the present day. The light is going to be natural- being set in England, so it'll probably be raining! The sounds will be people talking to start off- will raining sounding on windows and I will try and make some backing music to keep the spirit up.

I am going to do a mixture of camera angles, I will be doing very low angles like of just feet them going to look up and move on the characters. I will also do some high up shots looking down on the train as it pulls away from the station- i will use a crane to get this effect.

Hello everyone!
My name is Frankie Bowden-Graves and I have just started my AS Media Studies practical course. I have been asked to create a two minute film opening using a genre of my choice.
The genre I have chosen to do is Comedy and using Blogger I plan to keep you update throughout the year on how I am progressing.
